Zircon – The Ancient Gemstone | Origins, Fire & Value | GemMine
What is Zircon?
Zircon is one of Earth's oldest minerals, with some crystals dating back over 4 billion years — the oldest known material on our planet's surface. Not to be confused with the synthetic cubic zirconia (a diamond simulant), natural zircon is a completely distinct and genuinely precious gemstone prized for its extraordinary fire and brilliance that rivals diamond. Zircon occurs in a wide range of colours including blue, colourless, red, orange, yellow, and green, with blue and colourless being the most commercially popular. It rates 6.5–7.5 on the Mohs scale.
Origins & Mining Locations
| Origin | Notable Colours | Quality Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cambodia (Ratanakiri) | Blue, colourless (heat treated) | World's finest blue zircon |
| Sri Lanka | Blue, yellow, red, colourless | Wide variety, fine quality |
| Myanmar | Red, brown, colourless | Rare red material |
| Tanzania | Blue, green | Growing source |
| Australia | Colourless, yellow | Historic, archaeologically significant |
Natural vs Treated Zircon
Most commercial blue and colourless zircon on the market is heat-treated from brown or golden natural zircon, creating the vivid blue that zircon is known for in the trade. This treatment is standard and widely accepted. Rare natural-colour red, orange, and green zircon from Sri Lanka commands premiums for its unheated status. GemMine clearly discloses treatment status on all zircon.
Zircon's Extraordinary Brilliance
Zircon's refractive index (1.93–1.98) and dispersion (0.039) are among the highest of any natural gemstone, creating brilliance and fire that rivals fine diamond. Before diamond became widely available, zircon was the premier diamond substitute in fine jewellery. Today, its exceptional optical properties make it a genuinely prized gemstone in its own right.
Ethical Mining & Sourcing
GemMine sources zircon primarily from Cambodia and Sri Lanka through certified responsible dealers with full origin documentation. Cambodian blue zircon is a significant economic contributor to Ratanakiri province communities and GemMine supports fair pricing for producing communities.
