Morganite – Rose Beryl | Origins, Colours & Value | GemMine

What Is Morganite?

Morganite is the pink to rose variety of the mineral beryl — the same mineral family as emeralds and aquamarines. Its delicate peach-pink to vivid rose-pink colour is caused by manganese impurities. Morganite scores 7.5–8 on the Mohs hardness scale and is prized for its exceptional clarity and beautiful soft pink colour. Named in 1910 after American banker and gemstone enthusiast J.P. Morgan, morganite has surged in popularity in recent years as the centrepiece of rose gold jewellery.

Where Does Morganite Come From?

  • Brazil (Minas Gerais) – The original and most important source, producing crystals of exceptional size and quality. The "Rose of Maine" mine historically produced fine material.
  • Madagascar – One of the most important current sources, producing vivid pink and peach-pink morganite of excellent quality.
  • Afghanistan – Produces deeply saturated hot pink morganite of exceptional beauty.
  • Mozambique & Nigeria – African sources of commercial and fine-quality material.
  • USA (Maine & California) – Historic American sources; the Himalaya Mine in California produces fine specimens.
  • Pakistan – Small quantities of fine-quality pale to medium pink morganite.

Morganite Colours

  • Deep Rose/Hot Pink – The most valuable colour, intense and saturated, found in fine Brazilian and Madagascan specimens.
  • Salmon Pink – The classic peachy-pink popular in engagement rings.
  • Pale Pink/Blush – Very light, feminine colour popular for large statement pieces.
  • Peach – Warm peach-orange tones; most common in smaller commercial stones.

Ethical Sourcing

Morganite is predominantly mined through small-scale artisanal operations in Brazil, Madagascar, and Afghanistan. GemMine selects morganite from traceable supply chains with preference for certified material. Madagascar morganite increasingly comes with provenance documentation as the supply chain matures.

Morganite Value & Investment

While morganite is more accessible than other beryl family members, fine deep rose-pink material in sizes above 5ct from Brazil or Madagascar represents excellent value compared to pink sapphire of similar colour. The popularity of morganite in bridal jewellery has driven strong demand, and deeply saturated, large stones continue to appreciate.
